Here at Brisbane Youth Service [BYS], as we too respond to the challenges and constraints presented by COVID-19, it's very clear that the vulnerable young people in our community are deeply feeling the impact of the pandemic.

As an essential service we are committed to ensuring assistance continues to be available for vulnerable young people and young families in need.

They know too well the anxiety that comes from uncertainty, and maintaining good hygiene and physical distancing is impossible for young people who are sleeping rough or couch surfing. As the temperature drops, finding a place to stay warm becomes a daily challenge.

BYS needs YOU, our community and our supporters to stand with us during – and after – this challenging time to keep our young friends safe and well.

Your kind donation will go directly towards providing life-changing support and services for young people experiencing or at-risk of homelessness. Together, we can achieve so much more for the most vulnerable young people in our community.

Each year BYS sees more and more young people reaching out for support and in need of urgent assistance:

  • the number of young people we assisted rose 13 per cent between 2016 and 2019
  • over half of the 1500 young people we helped last year had no place to call home

This pandemic has affected us all, but young people have been disproportionately impacted. We know from the 1990s recession and the Global Financial Crisis that young people are hardest hit by economic downturn and take longer to recover – especially disadvantaged young people.

We have already seen a significant increase in requests for assistance and we know this trend will continue as more young people struggle to sustain housing and manage the mental health impacts of isolation.

For over 42 years BYS has been working to create new futures for vulnerable and at-risk young people, providing free, confidential services including:

  • crisis and transitional housing
  • emergency relief
  • medical clinic and mental health services
  • street outreach
  • specialist young women’s services
  • parenting and family assistance

As demand for our services continues to grow, we need your help.

Donate before 30 June to claim your tax deduction for the current financial year and help create new futures for young people experiencing homelessness and disadvantage.

* At Brisbane Youth Service we respect everyone who comes to us for help and many are working toward a fresh start in life. So, while their quotes and stories are true, client names and ages have been changed to protect their privacy and images are not always a true representation of the young person who has kindly shared their story. Thank you for your understanding.
