Get a group of friends together and be part of the Balfour Burn for St Giles. - March 16, 2014.
The Balfour Street hill is a Launceston landmark and The Balfour Burn was the idea of veteran Launceston journalist Danielle Blewett.
``I was sitting alongside a friend at the hairdresser who was talking about her crazy training routine up the Balfour hill.
``I’m no hill-climber … a few days later I noticed a story about an event in Sydney – the Balmoral Burn.
``It is my role at St Giles to find new ways to engage the community with our service … within seven days we had brought Rick Fontyn on board as event director and sent him to Sydney to see the Balmoral Burn – five months later we launched the 2014 event.’’
What’s so exciting about the Balfour Burn is that it is truly a community event.
The Charles Street café community will offer a festival of breakfast, lunch and brunch on the day from 8am.
From 11am , Southern Cross will televise the Burn, live down the hill and back onto a giant street TV screen – you can relax and watch your friends suffer while you enjoy a glass of wine or coffee and cake!
Launceston City Council and Tasmania Police have helped logistically with street closures and safety advice.
We are proud that the Launceston Eye Institute has decided to be the naming rights sponsor of the inaugural Burn.’’
Every dollar raised by the Burn will go back into children’s therapy services at St Giles.
