Our oceans are suffocating but on one small island off the coast of Bali, we have a chance to make a difference. On Thursday December 12th, 2019 20 teams of 2 brave people from around the world will race over land and sea to protect the future of the islands of Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan.

Previously pristine islands of the coast of Bali that have been heavily impacted by massive tourism growth and poor waste management. The Bali Hope SwimRun will involve running approximately 20 km and swimming 3 km. The combined fund raising target for this event is $150,000 which will contribute to saving 1000’s of tons of plastic being dumped into our oceans every year.

Here at Bali Children Foundation we believe that generational education will create generational change. Empowering the youth with English and environmental awareness from elementary years, will ensure they are able to take and maintain control of their islands and prevent a potential environmental disaster.

Proceeds raised from this event will support the continuation of the Bali Children Foundation education program currently being delivered to more than 1600 students across both islands. The program’s environmental message escalates, as the children move through to junior and high school and is a key focus in senior years entrepreneurial studies.

An equal split of funds raised from the event will support the growing requirements of community based organization Friends of Lembongan and the local Lembongan Recycling facility. Established in January 2012, FOL have been promoting the cleanup of rubbish and education of sustainable waste management practices for these islands. Working with Pak Putu and his grassroots recycling center over the last 2 years the facility has been able to scale up thanks to generous donations, fundraising efforts and partnerships such as the Bali Hope SwimRun.

Whilst much has been achieved to date there is still much more to do including acquiring more land for expansion of the facility and building new accommodation for the increase in workers. A glass crusher is most certainly another expensive item on the FOL wish list and construction of more concrete compounds for trash collection points around the island.
